Exploring Distance in Leader-Follower Relationships
Description
Leaders face new challenges as they cope with changes in culture, technology, and the workplace. This webinar examines the impact of distance—physical, interpersonal, and social—on our organizations, our governments, and our societies. It is now quite possible to develop followers and influence others halfway around the world, while it remains equally likely that the follower in the next cubicle may be oblivious to a leader's sphere of influence. Based on our recent book on the same topic, we will review some initial ideas about how distance is altering the study and practice of leadership. The webinar will address new research and theory that explores when and how leadership is transformed through space and time, and in what ways the notion of "distance" creates continuously evolving meanings for the leader-follower relationship.

Strategic Planning for Networks

Strategic planning. You know you should be doing more of it. But the way you normally do it requires lots of up-front time to do and lots of follow-up time to get buy-in. And frankly, you have trouble with the buy-in part. All that trouble, minimal follow-through. Great strategic planning processes are lightweight and participatory. This is nice-to-have for organizations, and it's critical for networks, where you don't have the benefit of hierarchy to influence its behavior. Networks will do what they do. In this Leadership Learning Community webinar, I describe how to do strategic planning for networks. I draw heavily from my experience leading the open strategic planning process for the Wikimedia movement, which drew over 1,000 participants and led to a movement-wide shift in focus on increasing reach and participation in developing countries. In this webinar, Professor john powell talks about how systems thinking and a structural lens can inform our work for racial justice and deepen our understanding of racial disparities. He examines how the interactions of structures and institutions create not only opportunity and deprivation, but also inhabit our ideas and language about race, identity and the self. Professor john powell is the Executive Director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the Ohio State University, and Williams Chair in Civil Rights & Civil Liberties at the Moritz College of Law. An internationally recognized authority in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties and issues relating to race, ethnicity, poverty, and the law, he was previously National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, Founder and Director of the Institute on Race and Poverty at the University of Minnesota, and a cofounder of the Poverty & Race Research Action Council.
