On completion of this course, the learner will be able to demonstrate written and oral communication skills that are needed as a leader in a health department by: identifying communication skills, distinguishing different writing techniques, and listing effective presentation skills.

Learning Objectives

Module 1: Effective Interpersonal Communication

  1. Distinguish the fundamental elements of a message
  2. Explain the message model
  3. Identify tangible and intangible barriers
  4. Distinguish the levels of listening
  5. Describe the guides to good listening
  6. Explain the key points of basic interpersonal communication

Module 2: Presentation Skills

  1. Identify the objectives of a good presentation
  2. Distinguish physical, mechanical, and paralinguistic aspects of a presentation
  3. Identify ways to open a presentation
  4. Explain three things audiences respond to most
  5. Create a checklist of presentation skills
  6. Identify correct ways of presenting visual aids
  7. Identify ways to close presentations
  8. List ways to answer questions during and after a presentation

Module 3: Good Writing Techniques

  1. Differentiate among the stages of writing
  2. Identify the proper use of transitions when writing
  3. Demonstrate appropriate use of descriptive adjectives
  4. Demonstrate correct document formatting
