Description: The next webinar in NACCHO’s Accreditation Preparation and Performance Improvement Series is entitled “Performance Management in Public Health: From Conceptualization to Implementation.” Building and using an effective performance management system is an important part of developing a culture of continuous quality improvement in your health department. It is also a requirement in domain 9 of the Public Health Accreditation Board’s (PHAB’s) accreditation standards and measures.

Performance management is the use of data to continuously monitor and improve performance to ensure that agency processes and activities are achieving strategic goals. This webinar will include an introduction to the concept and importance of performance management and will feature the story of one health department’s experience with developing a performance management system, using that system to evaluate the agency’s activities, and connecting the system to quality improvement, strategic planning, and community health improvement.

Heather Reffett, Performance Improvement Manager at the DC Department of Health (Washington, DC) will tell the story of how she led the agency in developing their system of performance management by carefully examining and developing relationships between the agency’s activities and goals. She will share details on the key steps they undertook to develop this comprehensive performance management approach, which links the prerequisites for accreditation, quality improvement, and other key business processes. From conceptualization through implementation and evaluation, the DC Department of Health’s process will be applicable to health departments of any size at any phase in the accreditation process or the Roadmap to a Culture of Quality Improvement.
