An awareness-level understanding of weapons of mass destruction is essential for addressing the public health readiness needs of the post-9/11 world. In Introduction to Weapons of Mass Destruction, you will hear Drs. Parker and Barnett explain chemical, biological and radiological weapons of mass destruction, with a focus on their unique characteristics and implications for public health emergency preparedness and response.

Learning Objectives

Having completed this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain the difference between chemical, biological, and radiological weapons of mass destruction

  2. Describe the different types of chemical weapons: Lethal vs. incapacitating/riot control; industrial agents and warfare agents; blood, nerve, choking, blister agents

  3. Describe how (generally) these chemical agents work

  4. List the steps in decontamination after a chemical weapon attack

  5. Explain the differences between the various levels of PPE

  6. Describe the characteristics of the Category A, B, and C biological weapons

  7. Define the various aspects of biological weapon infection: Incubation, diagnosis, communicability, post-exposure prophylaxis, treatment, lethality, and possibility of vaccination

  8. Describe the differences between particulate vs. electromagnetic radiation and ionizing vs non-ionizing radiation

  9. Discuss potential responses to radiological attack

  10. Describe the proper steps in decontamination after a radiological weapon attack
