Course Description

This course is provided by Federal Emergency Management Agency and will require a secondary login and/or registration.

The goal of this course is to assist the emergency management community and local officials in making the best decisions possible to protect their communities during tropical cyclone events. The original Community Hurricane Preparedness module was published in 2000. This 2nd edition provides updated information on hurricane science and National Weather Service forecast products. In addition, a new section on Emergency Management discusses decision-making tools that can help emergency managers in response and evacuation decision-making during hurricane threats. This module is also available in Spanish.

Target Audience

This course is designed for emergency managers.

Learning Objectives

Having completed this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify how tropical cyclones form, their climatology, typical tracks, and active season in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico
  2. Describe the various impacts from tropical cyclone hazards including high winds, storm surge, tornadoes, and heavy precipitation
  3. Demonstrate familiarity with the tropical cyclone forecast process and terminology
  4. Explain the use and limitations of products and tools provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Hurricane Center (NHC), and the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Offices (NWS WFOs) for hurricane preparedness, planning, response, and operations
  5. Analyze various sources of information and formulate a plan for dealing with a possible hurricane
